Monmouth County Hounds Visit Pony Club Camp

The Monmouth County Hunt (NJ) hounds and staff were excited to participate in WOW Camp, New Jersey Region’s Pony Club Camp, which took place at the Horse Park of New Jersey in Allentown the week of July 2nd. Due to the extreme temperature, the hound roading on horseback with campers was canceled, but the hounds and staff were happy to meet under a covered pavilion later that afternoon. Led by huntsman Meg Valnoski, MFH, the campers were introduced to several hounds and the basics of foxhunting.

Old Dominion Will Host Junior North American Field Hunter Championship

The Old Dominion Hounds (VA) will be hosting the 2018 Junior North American Field Hunter Championship this coming November. The Championship finals will be held on Saturday, November 10. We're hoping that by having the Championship on Saturday it will help families that travel. Old Dominion has also invited us to stay for hunting on Sunday. We are going to have a great weekend of fun, competition, and hunting. We are working with hunts right now to set Qualifying Hunt Meet dates - our working schedule to date follows below.

Willow Hoins, 15, Excels at Golden's Bridge Hounds

Willow Hoins, 15, a student at North Salem High School outside New York City, caught our attention handling numerous Golden's Bridge (NY) hounds to top placings at last spring's shows. She shares some of her experiences in kennels, in the field, and in the ring with Covertside Online. - Ed.  Foxhunting has been a part of my life since forever. We live just a mile or so from the kennels so we would always hear hounds. I remember stopping at fixtures on the way to nursery school and watching the hounds go off on Tuesdays. On most Saturday mornings my sister Rowan and I were in the road whip jeep with Richard Knowlton, who ultimately taught us how to whip-crack.

Monmouth County Junior Wins State Foxhunting Presentation

Monmouth County Hunt (NJ) junior Olive Scaff, 13, represented Pineland Riders Pony Club at the recent state championship, where she took first place for her presentation on foxhunting. A young leader, Olive is also a member of her local Stars and Strides, Teen Council and livestock 4-H clubs. Last month, she showed Monmouth County's unentered hound, Regal, to the blue ribbon in the junior handlers' 13 and older class at the New Jersey Inter-Hunt Puppy Show. She shared some of her experiences with us.

"Run Away with at Walk:" Timeless Trials of Ponies in the Field

Many of us remember the mixture of excitement and anxiety that accompanied our debuts in the hunt field. For riding instructors bringing out novice children and new ponies, however, those emotions are surely multiplied. In this recently-discovered letter from April 15, 1960, Honora Haynes described to her friend, Betty Morrison, the ups and downs of an ambitious day out with seven young charges at the now-defunct Millwood Hunt, in territory presently part of Old North Bridge Hounds' (MA) country.

Photo Gallery: Junior Handlers at Virginia Foxhound Show

At midday at the Virginia Foxhound Show, all eyes turned to the armada of junior handlers making their way from the kennels to the rings to compete! From first-timers to experienced young whippers-in, the future leaders of our sport demonstrated their showmanship skill - with plenty of affection for their patient charges, as well. These images capture the teamwork and bonding that make the children's classes so much fun to watch.
