"I love hearing the hounds' music and watching them pop out of the soybeans!" Sarah and Jack Leannarda have been hunting in Maryland with their father and mother, Leslie Deering, since they were seven and five years old. They are the latest recipients of the MFHA's Fairly Hunted Award, recognizing juniors who regularly follow hounds, to answer our Leash of Questions.

Together, the siblings enjoy showing hounds - Jack has a Junior Handler win under his belt - and hunter pacing. They were very proud to complete and win their region's junior flat series on their own. The sporting siblings also placed third and sixth at the North American Junior Field Hunter Championships, and have even tried pony racing.

Jack Leannarda, age 9, tackles our questions first.

Who is your favorite hunt horse or pony, and why?

Answer: I can't pick! I'm very lucky to have two awesome Welsh foxhunting ponies, Brookside Merit and Brookside Make Believe, who are full sisters. I started riding Merit on hunt trail rides when I turned five, but outgrew her after we did the Junior Field Hunter Championships. I thought she was the best pony ever and didn't want another hunt pony until my mom found her sister. I love to run and jump them both.

In one sentence, what is your favorite thing about foxhunting?

Answer: I love hearing the hounds' music and watching them pop out of the soybeans.

Getting up early to go hunting: Jump out of bed excited, or roll over for five more minutes?

Answer: I'd prefer ten more minutes!

Next up is Sarah Leannarda, age 12.

Who is your favorite hunt horse or pony, and why?

Answer: My new pony, PL Zade, because she is an amazing jumper. She keeps up well with the OTTBs in first flight, even though she's only 14 hands!

In one sentence, what is your favorite thing about foxhunting?

Answer: I enjoy all the friends who share my love of horses and hounds, and of course the breakfasts!

Getting up early to go hunting: Jump out of bed excited, or roll over for five more minutes?

Answer: Jump up! I'm usually the first one dressed, tacked and ready.

Jack and Sarah enjoy hunting with Carrollton Hounds in Westminster, Maryland.

I cannot express how proud I am of all our junior riders! It has been a pleasure to see them grow up in front of me. Their enthusiasm for the sport and for the hounds is wonderful. I can't wait to see what they do next!
